Echo is a large-scale research data service that provides reliable, cloud-accessible storage for data-intensive science communities across the UK. Operated by STFC Scientific Computing, Echo enables researchers to store, access and share datasets ranging from terabytes to multiple petabytes using an industry-standard S3-compatible object storage interface. This allows scientific applications, data management tools and research workflows to interact with Echo using the same technologies widely adopted across the commercial cloud sector. The service is designed to support collaborative and geographically distributed research, enabling data to be accessed securely from universities, laboratories and partner organisations both nationally and internationally. Integrated with STFC’s wider data infrastructure, including large-scale archival storage services, Echo provides a flexible platform for active scientific datasets while supporting the long-term stewardship of valuable research data. It is used by a broad range of IRIS communities to manage experimental, observational and simulation data throughout the research lifecycle.
